Identifying Common Types of Wall Damage

Learn how to recognise common signs of surface damage, including small cracks, dents, holes and areas that may show signs of moisture. Understand when a repair may be suitable for a DIY approach and when further assessment may be needed.

Preparing The Surface for Painting

Learn how to smooth, clean and prepare repaired areas before painting. Explore the role of primer and surface sealing in helping patched areas blend more evenly with the surrounding wall.

Measuring & Fitting Replacement Drywall​

Learn how to measure damaged areas, cut replacement drywall panels and fit patches neatly into place. Explore how careful sizing can help reduce gaps, limit the amount of joint compound needed and create a smoother surface for finishing.

Securing & Reinforcing Repairs​

Learn how to support and secure drywall patches using suitable materials such as backing strips, mesh tape and appropriate fasteners. Practice reinforcing repaired areas so they are ready for joint compound, smoothing and finishing.

Applying  Joint Compound

Practice applying and feathering joint compound to help create a smooth transition between the repaired area and the surrounding wall surface.

Sanding & Smoothing 


Practice sanding repaired areas carefully to help create a smooth, even surface that is ready for priming and painting. Explore simple dust-control methods to help keep the workspace cleaner while you work.

Cutting Out Damaged Drywall Safely

Practice marking and removing damaged drywall sections carefully using suitable hand tools. Learn the importance of checking for potential pipes, cables and other hidden features before cutting, while creating a clean opening that is ready for a replacement patch.

Painting Over Repairs

Learn how to prepare, prime and paint repaired areas so they blend more evenly with the surrounding wall. Explore basic color-matching and paint-application techniques to help create a neat, well-finished appearance.

Course Outcome

By the end of the session, you will have a clearer understanding of how to approach common drywall repairs in your own home with greater confidence. You will not simply watch demonstrations—you will practise each stage yourself in a supervised workshop environment, from preparation and patching to smoothing and finishing.
